Dunkirk's seven-minute trailer confuses cinemagoers who thought they were watching Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman is Warner Bros' new (and, indeed, first) proto-feminist superhero film starring Gal Gadot, which was released in June.
Dunkirk is Christopher Nolan's tension-filled depiction of the 1941 Dunkirk Evacuation that nominally stars Tom Hardy in a beefy ensemble cast that features Mark Rylance and Harry Styles. It isn't released until 20 July.
These are two very different films, so you can understand why people who had bought a ticket to see the former were confused when, shortly before Wonder Woman was due to play in the cinema, they were shown a seven-minute-long scene from Dunkirk that begins with a message that a "feature presentation" is about to begin.
The trailer, which impressed viewers who saw it at London's ComicCon in April, is also preceded by title cards for Warner Bros and Nolan's company Syncopy.
Viewers, who were expecting to see Gadot strength-training on the fantasy all-female island of Themyscira, were then shown footage of Hardy dogfighting with German planes in a Spitfire and civilians preparing their boats to aid the evacuation.
It caused some to believe they were in the wrong screen at the cinema.
But, according to other testimonies, the trailer did its job – in encouraging people to see Nolan's epic when it does arrive in cinemas.
