Black Mirror: Internet Dyn hack the butt of Netflix viral marketing jokes

Due to a cyber attack on a major domain name host called Dyn, a large cluster of websites — including Netflix, Twitter, Reddit, and Spotfy — were temporarily offline Friday morning. To many social media jesters, it all felt like a Black Mirror-induced nightmare.

Once Twitter was back up and running, many users joked the hack was a viral marketing stunt executed by Netflix to promote the third season of Black Mirror, which typically conjures techno-adverse visions. Season 3 episode “Nosedive,” for one, is a social satire: Bryce Dallas Howard and Alice Eve show extreme ramifications of a social media- and Internet-obsessed world.

Dyn helps users get to where they want to go online by directing them to the proper domain names. A statement from Dyn on the situation reads, “Starting at 11:10 UTC on October 21th-Friday 2016 we began monitoring and mitigating a DDoS attack against our Dyn Managed DNS infrastructure. Some customers may experience increased DNS query latency and delayed zone propagation during this time. Updates will be posted as information becomes available.”

Dyn declared the outages resolved before 10 a.m. But, if anything, perhaps this is a much-needed reality check on our Internet dependency.
