SWANNANOA, N.C. (WLOS) — Some of Buncombe County's youngest anglers got to try their hand at fishing on Saturday.
The group met at Owen Park in Swannanoa for the county's Kids' Fishing Derby.
Children 15 and under were able to cast their lines to try to come up with a catch. Prizes were awarded for the largest fish, the smallest fish, and the most fish.
Organizers say the event is all about teaching them something new and having fun while doing it.
"I love it. I like to see the kids when they catch a fish and they bring it up to get it measured, even if it's a tiny, tiny minnow fish," said Lynn Pegg of Buncombe County Recreation Services. "We've had some good-sized catfish too, and they're excited when they catch a fish."
This is the second year the county has put this event. It's held in partnership with the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission
