Kodak Black bows at No. 2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart (dated April 22) with his debut studio album, Painting Pictures. It arrives with 71,000 units earned in the week ending April 6, according to Nielsen Music. The release simultaneously spurs three album tracks onto the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Of its total album units earned, 22 percent came from traditional sales, while streaming equivalent albums (SEA) accounted for 72 percent. (The remaining sum were in track equivalent album units.) The set lands at No. 3 on the overall Billboard 200 chart.
Meanwhile, the 19-year-old rapper’s breakout hit, “Tunnel Vision,” spends a second straight week at No. 5 over on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, mainly thanks to its hefty streams: 29.7 million in the week ending April 6 (down 5 percent). For six consecutive weeks, the track has been among the top five most streamed songs, across all genres. It dips 2-4 on the Streaming Songs chart during the current frame.
Streams trigger three debuts from Kodak Black’s new album on the chart, led by “Conscience,” featuring Future, which starts at No. 42, powered by 8.4 million streams. “Day For Day” bows at No. 46 (6.9 million streams), while “Coolin And Booted” enters at No. 50 (6.4 million).
Elsewhere on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Kodak Black re-enters the chart at No. 43 as a featured act on A Boogie Wit da Hoodie’s “Drowning,” due mostly to a 7 percent lift in streams (to 7.7 million), while the track also climbs at radio and in digital downloads. The track previously spent one week on the chart (April 1) at No. 46.
Lil Uzi Vert Flies: Lil Uzi Vert vaults 26-8 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs with “XO Tour Llif3,” earning his first top 10 showing as a lead act (he previously spent 10 weeks at No. 1 as a featured guest on Migos’ “Bad And Boujee” earlier this year). The track takes Streaming Gainer honors, soaring 106 percent to 27.3 million streams in the most recent tracking week.
The increase in streams is due in part to a dance challenge, dubbed #LilUziVertChallenge, which is based on a shoulder shimmy dance performed by the rising rapper, prompting fan-made videos across several social media platforms. In addition to streams, digital sales also see a 6 percent climb (to 17,000 downloads), causing a 10-6 jump on the Rap Digital Song Sales chart.
J. Cole’s New No. 1: J. Cole earns his fourth No. 1 on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop airplay chart as “Deja Vu” hops 4-1 in its 14th charting frame, due to a 6 percent increase in spins at the format (in the week ending April 9). The rapper most recently topped the chart in 2015 as a feature on Jeremih’s “Planes,” which spent one week at the top. Before that, his songs “Crooked Smile,” featuring TLC, and “Power Trip,” featuring Miguel, each topped the list in 2013.
Cole, who was raised in North Carolina, reaches No. 1 with help from three home state radio stations, who championed the song with the week’s highest weekly spins; WQNC, Charlotte (109 plays), WQOK, Raleigh-Durham (98), and WPEG, Charlotte (94).
Charlie Wilson’s ‘Blessed’ No. 1: Over on the Adult R&B Songs airplay chart, Charlie Wilson earns his fifth No. 1 with “I’m Blessed,” featuring T.I., climbing 5-1 in its 14th week on the list (up 16 percent in plays). WMJM, Louisville, leads with most plays at the format, with 52 weekly spins.
Wilson scored his first crowning song on the 24-year old chart in 2005 with “Charlie Last Name: Wilson,” which spent six weeks at No. 1. His longest-running chart-topper came in 2010 when “You Are” notched 13 total weeks at No. 1.
